The real answer is :

"Because the only free time I've had has been spent running kids around, servicing your car and generally doing chores. When was time travel invented?! Until I'm able to get into a phone booth type device and go back to last weekend and do the garden whilst the rest of the world is in stasis then I'm afraid I can't do shit about the garden."

But a half decent excuse would be :

"At this time of the year, the soil needs the aeration and worms like long grass so if we leave it long it'll attract the worms and the drainage problem will be sorted by next Summer. "

Let her prove you wrong - there's fuck all on the t'internet about worms liking long grass but she couldn't find it if there was. She probably uses LIVE.COM for chists sake. Also, this means any discussion about this is put off until next summer when you can then mow the lawn whilst listening to the football on the radio in the blazing heat rather than getting wet through and covered in mud - smart huh?
